Its operation is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction: when the primary circuit is connected, a magnetic field is generated; when disconnected, the magnetic field decays rapidly, inducing high-voltage electricity in the secondary winding. Spark plugs consist of a center electrode, side electrodes, and an insulator, with the core being the precise control of the electrode gap.
Their working principle is more direct: after receiving a pulse of high-voltage electricity from the high-voltage wire, they break down the air between the two electrodes to generate an electric spark, completing the final step of igniting the air-fuel mixture. The electrode gap and shape directly affect the ignition effect; a larger gap requires a higher breakdown voltage; sharper electrode edges reduce the required breakdown voltage.
If the insulator is broken or the electrode gap is abnormal, it can also cause misfires, resulting in a "putt-putt" sound from the exhaust pipe, accompanied by increased fuel consumption and worsened exhaust pollution.
Lgnition coil failure tends to be associated with "interrupted energy supply": When the winding is short-circuited, open-circuited, or the insulation cap is broken, insufficient high-voltage electricity cannot be provided, leading to severe engine vibration, starting failure, and incomplete combustion of the air-fuel mixture, resulting in a surge in fuel consumption and black smoke from the exhaust. More importantly, ignition coil failure can cause misfires in multiple cylinders, causing far more damage to the engine than a single spark plug failure.
Routine checks should include inspecting the insulation cap for damage and the terminals for corrosion. Periodically use a multimeter to measure the winding resistance and insulation – the resistance between the winding and the casing should not be less than 50MΩ; otherwise, insulation is considered poor. If a weak or no spark is observed, a grounding test can be performed to determine if replacement is necessary.
In short, although ignition coils and spark plugs have different functions and structures, they work together to maintain the engine's "breathing rhythm." Understanding their synergy and maintenance points is fundamental to ensuring driving safety and is crucial for extending engine life.
